Metals won't feed your family. They won't help your nerves in the least, protect your life, or keep anything clean. All of those things I listed will, and they're not even the most valuable currency to have in a shitty situation. Anyone can trade toilet paper or a can of beans. If you've got a supply of those, you're no more valuable to a group of Jimmy Jackasses than Joe Dickbag with his own collection of store-bought bullshit. But if you can fix a busted generator, that's a different story. Skills are the most important thing by far. Get several, and get good at them. Be the asshole people want to call MacGyver. Get some horticulture under your belt, learn what herbs grow in your area and what to use them for. Be a backup medic in a pinch. And figure out how to brew your own booze.
