Great truth. Much of this modern art just lives off contrarianism, liking anything that's somehow different. This eventually leads to an utter erosion in the criteria by which art is judged, and consequently this kind of art becomes completely pointless. This is the only logical outcome for these kinds of tendencies, and it will eventually happen.

I see this a lot in movies, in many circles the most valued movies are the ones that are as weird as possible, and disregards conventions and the very audience as much as possible. The critics cum buckets, but in the end what gets the audience is capeshit and blockbusters with lots of guns and explosions. What happens is that movies divide into two tendencies, the "artsy"-tendency, equivalent to the modern art stuff, which panders to critics and contrarians who want to seem superior for liking things that most people don't, and the commercial tendency, which simply panders to the widest audience possible through the lowest common denominator. Movies used to be good when they pandered to the audience somewhat, but remained fresh and original. Now it's just either-or.

It'll all blow over when people on both sides get sick of it. Fashions like this are always cyclical. Eventually it'll be contrarian to do the opposite thing of what you're doing now, which was being contrarian in the first place, going full circle to non-contrarian expression.

Rinse and repeat.
