It kinda depends. For example Essen: The city centre is the usual ugly clusterfuck of fast food chains, large retailers and shopping malls, it serves its purpose, I guess.

If you go north of the centre, past the University, you'll get deeper and deeper into little Lebanon.

However, if you go south of the centre, you'll get into more and more middle and upper class districts, till you get to the rural areas that make the northern ghettos look like they're not even in the same town.

This whole north-south divide has become stronger and stronger over the years and those processes that made one half of the city an absolute shitshow, while the other is decent to good apparently happened all over the area.
