Quite a lot of prisoners had expected to be gassed in the shower rooms (rumors went around) and they tell about their amazement when the water came out of the showers. So if you mean such types of claims, this is easily explainable by human psychology. Such people may claim (unwittingly incorrectly) to have survived the gas chambers.
