When you own a business you set up a corporation that owns it. Then you make yourself president. Let's say the business makes 10k a month profit. You make your salary be 11k a month as president. At the end of the year the business didn't pay you 12k. So the next year that 12k needs to be paid before the business owes any taxes. Businesses can get tax refunds too.
