Africans have been flooding into Southwark for about 20 years now. They're mostly Nigerians with some Ghanaians. The older and fresh ones speak really bad pigeon English. A lot of money is being spent on our infrastructure, since we're so close to central London. The Elephant & Castle is a shithole, but it's like 10 minutes away from Waterloo, London Bridge and the Southbank.

The local authorities think that by demolishing the 1960s and '70s council estates, they can somehow lower the crime rate and solve the housing crisis. Meanwhile, the newer places are really no different to the old estates, and the build quality is apparently miserable. There's a small block of flats in Peckham which is due to be demolished, despite being only 6 years old

House prices around here are beyond ridiculous. My house is a 4 bedroom Victorian terrace and apparently worth around £700,000. Nobody in their right mind would pay that kind of money for a place like this. A number of people new to the area rent, but most who have been here for decades (including immigrants) rent from the coucil, which is much much cheaper.

The waiting list to get a council property is a mile long, and some people pretend to be homeless and desperate (pregnant, ill, whatever). Sadly this does work, and it's done not only here but also all over London.
