He thought people weren't getting his jokes and were laughing for the wrong reasons. Essentially he felt like most people were laughing at him rather than with him, and were missing the point. In essence, he thought he failed as an artist and comedian because of this.

I can understand and respect that. Even if I don't agree exactly with everything that he does, I respect his right to pursue his craft how he wants and if he stops liking how it is perceived he can stop producing it.

I can vouche for this. Saw his stand-up in Fresno, during the time when 2nd season of Chappelle's Show was big. Hecklers kept yelling "I'm Rick James" and "do Rick James!" At one point, he stopped the show, and refused to continue until the audience shut up. A couple of spics got into a fight over the heckling at one point and were escorted out by security.

You guys are all clearly young as shit or just extremely retarded. Dave had some sort of a nervous breakdown when he realized he no longer had the ability to produce the extremely high standard for material he had set in the first two seasons. This is why he made a surprise trip to South Africa in the middle of taping and abandoned the show (hence the "lost episodes").

If Comedy Central was really that pissed about Clayton Bigsby and the race pixies, they wouldn't have let them air in the first place. Shit Clayton Bigsby was the goddamned pilot, if they didn't like that one because it was too offensive, the whole show would have never existed.

Some production guy that was on set laughed in such a way that really bothered dave during the filming of the pixie sketches. He felt that people weren't laughing because it was funny/comedy but more so because of racial stereotypes.
