The difference is that in the countries where college is free, it is also a lot more difficult. If you are failing or even keep doing mediocre, you are out.

So basically they weed out the people who do not belong in college in the first place. Which is actually a pretty good system. They also do not have stupid sports teams that they put on pedestals. In fact, most of those schools do not have any officials sports teams, and are places purely for education.

In the US, colleges are a huge industry. As long as you keep paying, you can go to school indefinitely to get your social arts degree in psychology or sociology or whatever. Even better if you can throw a football, of course.
