Servers cost a lot to maintain; electricity, upgrades, maintenance, etc. Then there's organizing the moderators, janitors, etc.

Start at the bottom. Funding has been a frequent issue, and Cred Forums has died several times before due to it.
There are still plenty of ways around that.

plenty of websites try to do this already. Then uBlock and the filter lists it uses get updated a few days later and kill the anti-adblocking stuff again. It's an arms race between the website and the browser that it's pretty much impossible for the website to win.

Besides, the real issue is images and video. I know people who host their (mostly-text based) websites on a Raspberry Pi. Text is so tiny to a modern internet connection that it's essentially free. When you think that War and Peace in pure text is something like 3MB you see where the bandwidth allowance goes.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if Cred Forums costs more than reddit for this reason.
