I just watched it, it was good I would say 7/10.
In general it felt like one of those fairy tale like disney movies only a bit darker.
I was actually expecting a lovecraftian movie where the protag got raped or something by a monster but it was more like a love story honestly.

The real monster is man.

Overall I liked it. I thought the last hour was superior to the first. I was a bit worried at the beginning, but Del Toro wrapped the story up nicely.

I enjoyed the portrayal of 1950s America. Mercy, the Cadillac dealership looked exactly like something out of pictures my grandparents had. Also the whole movie had aBioshockfeel to it. What I didn't like the tired, worn-out trope of the racist, evil "Christian", and the portrayal of the US Military general, both paper-thin characters.

Although it is enjoyable, it suffers from some problems.
1. The black woman sidekick
You can't make the main character mute and make her close friend a super talkative black woman who makes jokes every time she's on screen. Plus, she wasn't really necessary, she just was there.
Without her, the plot would still have advanced at the same rhythm and barely anything would have changed. The fact that she talks too much brings me to the second point.
2. Too many dialogues
It's a movie about a mute chick, who communicates with the monster through sign language. Making the movie almost mute with just the minimum amount of words would have benefited by this.
3. Forced characters and racism.
I get it's supposed to be set in the sixties, but was the movie really in need of a gay side character? Or the racial insults towards blacks we see sometimes? I doubt that.
4. Movie is too long
It's a nice story and all, but making it 1.30h instead of 2 would have helped. Some scenes feel very unnecessary and are there just to dilate the movie's length.

Alright, I get that it was for love and not just purely physical, but regardless, the fact is she disregarded others for her own love, her own happiness...it's just not a plot I'm interested in. I'm more interested in characters fighting for a greater good.

Personal satisfaction as motivation can be great too. But I don't think it was done well in this movie. She just seemed selfish to me.

I really liked it. I guess I'm a sucker for a love story. I really hope Sally Hawkins wins best actress. She definitely stands out by showing her emotions without talking.
