So if Scar doesn't want to be king as the song title seems to suggest, why does he kill Mufasa?

Mufasa and Pride Rock as a whole are kinda' dickish to him. He sets up Simba to get caught in the stampede so HE can save Simba and earn respect and admiration. Mufasa unwittingly steals his thunder, and when Scar lets it slip he knew of the stampede beforehand, Mufasa prepares to exile him. Scar pushes him off in a fit of rage, then realizes what he's done and spins it all on Simba, causing Simba to run away.

"Heavy is the Crown" is him starting out viewing kingship as a burden, slowing going mad from all the power he now wields, and going full totalitarian.
