They already are in great trouble, and with KnK flopping too, they may not survive for long. They got another chance with Hibike Euphonium 2, but it's very unlikely that a sequel to something that barely broke even, if that, in the first place, suddenly sells much more. If Hibike also flops, which it's extremely likely to do, they may have something else in progress that's gotten far enough to be released and maybe save them, but I'm doubtful. If they've spent all their money of that Free thing, they will die. Free is dead, and will flop too. They could sell their buildings and maybe survive for long enough to make one more thing after Free, perhaps VEG, but well, even if they survive, they will pretty much be dead unless it becomes the next Evangelion. And these slow, deep, episodic anime ALWAYS flop, so no, they are dead, unless a miracle happens with Hibike 2 or VEG (if they manage to survive that long)

I just assumed Kyoani decided to lose money on purpose, because there was no way this wouldn't, and everyone could know that from the very beginning.

Actually it didn't show PW's profit, but we know that they're still in the green after spending on PW and purchasing Koe no Katachi's anime rights.

An LN fansubbing site held a poll on what they should translate next, and PW is up there at the top, followed behind by VEG, both of them leaving the third and the rest in the dust. It's a gaijin poll maybe but some people are interested in their LNs at least

Regardless, it's really hard to properly talk about profits and sales since there's really no concrete profit figures. All there is is just the amount of BDs sold through Amazon, thus discounting all other sale avenues, and the occasional scan of financial reports that doesn't even contain all the data.

So the only thing left is just to assume shit, and by the looks of it seems all is likely well since they've been physically expanding and buying rights all over.
