The third generation, 3, Silent Line, Nexus, Ninebreaker, and Last Raven, are kind of the epitome of the series.

FA is more standard arena, custom game style. The SP is okay with some difficulty spikes.

The ps2 games have a much better singleplayer component than either FA or VD though.

I'd have to get a ps2 or emulate them in that case. The psp ones are ports of the ps2 ones aren't they, so if I were to get a vita (which I was thinking about anyway) I could play them on that, but dropping like £200 on a vita isn't too appealing to me even though there are a good few games on it I would probably check out

All I want is a AC game where you have a hub area in which you can talk to clients/npc's/characters with a relatively detailed conversation tree. You have to choose one corporation to represent at the very start of the game, perhaps they each try to 'woo' you when first visiting the hub, then perhaps later in the game you can betray your corp and join another for certain benefits and downsides.
Game has story missions like any other AC game as well as repeatable side ops you can play to unlock new parts/money etc. Side missions would be varied and use the games mechanics in different ways, perhaps exploratory missions/raids/escorts/horde modes etc.
I just want a AC game that is lengthy, and where choosing a corporation over another unlocks certain parts/weapons and locks you out of others.

The series has ALWAYS sold badly, but honestly it never mattered if they did because the games always had a shoestring budget so it didn't take many sales to recoup it.

As long as it doesn't interfere with the gameplay by say lagging when you need a dodge a missile, it'll be fine. And I don't think any AC had that issue, even 1. The games tend to run fairly well, if not amazing.
