Katana. They are the best weapons because they are made with authentic nippon steel and folded over a 1000 times.

A real mans weapon.

katanas are not meant to hit other swords, they are much lighter and thinner, of course it's going to break you hit another sword as hard as you can with it. that's not the purpose of a katana at all

It was more of a last resort weapon for the Samurai. the primary weapon of a Samurai was his bow.

...

superior design commin through

There's only one correct answer.

Battle Realms has cool Samurai. Sword for melee, bow for range, seppuku move that does tons of damage to nearby units.

lance is also the choice of weapon for knights
human missile and all

...

It really depends.

Katanas are great when they use iaido, since it's relatively unique to them and stylish as fuck.

Greatswords are my favorite, but they need to have a sense of weight and impact, so you feel like you're really slamming monsters around and chopping them in half.

Greatswords are satisfying as fuck, although I like regular straight swords too.

Hammer
They've all got their place and they all look better in certain situations but if you give me a choice I just want to smash heads with a hammer

My favorite weapons are katanas.

Halberd is the best. It's basically a longspear + axe rolled into 1. What more do you want?

>Idiots who don't even realize swords are meant for cutting not for bashing

Quarterstaff, if anyone actually did quarterstaffs right.

How do you even shatter a sword like that? The whole made of steel thing not get in the way of that?

Big stupid greatswords

Both are designed for different purposes. Katana was designed to slice unarmored/shitty armored enemies since even the best armor in Japan was pretty shit.

The long sword mostly used for poking and bashing and the occassional half sword pummeling to crush.

Halberd is best, especially that version with the hook for dismounting cavaliers

I use a lot of katanas, since devs tend to make them stronger than most other swords. Which is fine by me because I love then, aesthetically.

Practical weapons only

Opposite actually. Katanas are thicker and heavier than European swords of the same length.

f l a i l

You have 10 seconds to name a sword more swag than the rapier.

>Let's use this sharp and narrow thing to bash with
Also
>Let's call holding the blade and hitting with the guard half-swording cuz we think we know things about swords

DELETE THIS RIGHT NOW

how the fuck isn't a chainsaw practical

this nigga knows whats up.

...

I can't, because that's literally all a rapier is meant to be. Flashy and good looking, it's not for combat, other then 1v1 duels.

Not exactly but close, Katana also has one of the fastest (if not the fastest, I don't know) draw into attack of any sword as it was worn at hip in the perfect angle for an arced swing that would remove your opponents upper torso. It's not great for extended fights but you can kind of think of it as a wild west style weapon in which people would not only sword fight but also test their fortuitous draw speed, whereas most other dueling swords would start with weapon drawn.

Is a flail an actually effective weapon in real life? Was it ever used in actual combat?

Unwieldy, messy, needs fuel, the chain is likely to break or come off if used against another weapon.

Rapiers

Always rapiers

Yes but it didn't look like the one in that picture. It really looked more like this.

fist

>It's a flimsy as fuck stealth spearfag thread
Don't think anyone's forgotten the ruckus you clowns made last time, you just want to bitch up and down about how underrated your toothpick is by baiting other weaponfags to brag about their crap and set a stage, there are no video games here.

My dick was unwieldy and messy while I was plowing your mom, you insufferable faggot.

Chainsaws are a 10/10 on the scale of practicality. You stick them in a dude and he dies; that's as practical as it gets.

the 1h flails were meme weapons really, there's scant evidence they even existed but they have way more problems than they're worth
the polearm version was more practical but even then it wasn't anything special

How would it not be practical? Its literally a spiked ball of metal on a chain. You smash people in the face with it until they die.

...

Couldn't you hurt yourself fairly easily?

This nigger knows whats up

Have you ever used one?

you can't block with it at all, they're useless in close quarters, they're dangerous to you and your friends around you, they're very impractical to carry

nigga what the fuck is that shit? your grandpas crutches? lmao get that shit outta here.

You're insane man, rapiers killed the game. The introduction of rapiers destroyed the armored knight (anymore so than the long bow). They were weapons that were easy to use and hard to master.

...

I own a katana that was hand forged in china, its printed on the blade to prove it

...I also know how to use it

ranged > melee

CURVED

SWORDS

failing that one of those Chinese straight swords that I forget the name of

And then you hit a chunk of steel. If you're lucky the chain will snap. If you're unlucky the saw will kick back and hit you in the head, shoulders or arms.

I don't think the chain would handle bone too well

a dao?

Shut your mouth. Allow me to educate you.

no the other one

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon style

>katana
>china
>"its printed on the blade"

bait

All of you AD kids need to get the fuck out.

>post farming tool
>expects people to believe him

Speaking of which, what kind of shields were historically used to combat against ranged opponents?

>salty weeb upset european sword fighting techniques are superior
>katanafags will never know the joys of ending them rightly

jian

Katana.
Look good, fast and are always represented

You do know that farming tools where often converted to weapons?

One-handed axes.
Spears are also great.

what do you mean, like pavises or actual hand shields? because shields used by men vary throughout periods

that's not a flail that's a bommy knocker

Sounds like you faggots need to pack some muscle on and buy American-made chainsaws that are designed for heavy duty use, like tearing through an excessively large number of undead and/or demons.

just...normal shields? Arrows usually come from above, just hold it over your head and hope for the best. There weren't any specifically anti-ranged shields as far as I know

can somebody post the edit where the katana cuts though it

A wall.

Anything big enough to cover your torso, I guess? Shields and ranged weapons are both old as fuck.

Great Club and only the Great Club

Post some shields then guys. I don't know any actual names or types.

I always love going sword and board. Actually, mace and board really.

>muscle
>for a device designed to remove the need for physical strength out of chopping down trees
this bait is dumb

THIS IS FAKE. MY TAIWANESE ANIMATIONS TAUGHT ME THAT THE KATANA CAN CUT THROUGH TANKS LIKE BUTTER

Kite shields and tower shields I guess. Heater shields are a little to small but the user's tended to be better armoured anyway.
Round shields would have been good too. Really and shield used before good plate armour was developed would probably be fairly arrow proof.

Big ones.

As for my favorite weapon, I've become a big fan of quarterstaves.

They come with various problems.
They're a hassle to carry because of all the dangling and you'd walk a lot more than you would fight.

It's not a good weapon for formation because you need to swing in a lot and this would be dangerous to your brethren left and right.

Try holding one up like you would a sword in a duel. The ball dangles around and it's just exhausting to balance the thing.

>2016
>People still thinking 1000 hardening and annealing steps change anything

Yeah, they did it that way back when they knew nothing about metals, so the craftsman had 1000 iterations to zero in on the preferred hardness/ductility combo. But now that we know way more information about metallurgy, there's no need to do a thousand steps.

Work harden. Anneal. Maybe temper. Maybe repeat with the first batch to learn your parameters. But that's it.

round shields in the viking era, kite shields after that which look like an upside down teardrop, then heater shields during the 13th-14th centuries, then hand pavises
there's also pavises used by crossbowmen as mobile cover which are too large to be used in combat, and bucklers used by lots of different people which have a whole host of advantages

Look at that chip in the longsword. The Knight's weapon is crippled, and he is most certainly helpless. The Samurai at this point would then unsheathe his Wakizashi side sword, and defeat the disarmed Knight.

This is the second time Im posting this
but these gentlemen would like to speak with you about rapiers usefulness

>mfw a weeb says a broadsword is slower than a katana.

they also just had shitty iron on the islands

I love using a tower shield in Neverwinter Nights 2 on a dwarf wielding a hammer or morningstar.

I always lean towards a Bastard sword if the option is available, Otherwise any non-flashy two handed sword is my choice.

>broadsword

I'm almost 90% certain you're referring to an arming sword.

He's right tho, in terms of draw speed anyway.

You do know that knights dont carry just 1 weapon into battle dont you?

I wonder how well they would've done without all those spears

Even then, that sword is still more than serviceable with that chip in it, he could still bash that motherfucker in the face with the pommel

Wakizashi and Tantos are good tier weapons though

...

>bait
I really just hate you right now.

your evil dead references weren't very good

>he doesn't understand the power behind a pommel strike

That the equivelent of taking a ball peen hammer to the face.

>Wakizashi
>penetrating knight armor

Well, just like swords
Rapiers were the back up weapons in a era were armor was becoming more and more rare to find in battle.
Also they are lighter than medieval swords

it wasn't me, I just get where he was going with it. not everything is bait, sometimes it's just a mess of a joke.

they're the same weight, the weight is just distributed differently

More of these

The original video says that the sword is still usefull and deadly as before the blow

...

...

fits quite nicely through that letterbox slot on your head

I'm currently brainstorming a manga story about an idealistic world that takes the best parts of ranged and melee to the extremes. Kinda like Rurouni Kenshin.

An example of a fight:
Bowman vs a sword and shield guy.

The latter guy seems to have the advantage because he can block the arrows, but the bow guy manages to close in, contrary to his interests. S&S guy realizes that the bow guy is trying to close in the distance between his shots so that he can't block them. So he runs at the bow guy and attacks. Bow guy dodges around the shield arm and notches an arrow. The sword guy thinks "I have him now!" and starts to turn, when he hears "SHHHHINNNNNK," the scraping sound of the arrowtip against his shield.

He realizes that in order for him to impale bow guy, he has to be able to see him, react, and spare time enough to lunge, whereas bow guy only has to see him, and his shot will connect instantly. So shield guy stops turning.

Guess what happens next.

Stop posting memes

I don't care because that sounds retarded

No

It's a tie between the warhammer, and the bastard sword. Bastard sword was like the Ferrari of the middle ages, but the warhammer is literally so fucking good at killing people there should be something against it in the Geneva convention.

He's talking about he chip post. The guy was making a fucking joke he knows that chip doesn't mean shit

Carry on then.

>Usually the Tanks dick

1. Stage
Genuine weeaboos think the Katana cuts through tanks
2. Stage
HEMA experts arrive and tell the truth and point out some facts
3. Stage
People come back to the Katana, liking it (un)ironically and laugh at Stage 2 autists

healsluts not welcome

>People come back to the Katana
why would you, it's just a falchion

The benefit to rapiers, is they're good at dealing with people who also have rapiers. Which causes more people to use rapiers until eventually you have a fight where everyone fucking has them. The one or two jerkdicks who bring a weapon like a spear, or a bastard sword, have a fucking field day.

When do people start dumping furry porn?

>I'll polish your sword user

because swords are cool, man

What kind of sword does Raiden use? It's definately not a Katana.

>Canadian Tonfa
You can't be fucking serious.

Some fantasy tacticool thing.

The tip reminds me of a dha, but the handle is definitely meant to be some sort of "modern day" katana

A blade with a shitty handle

Katanas are only cool when their moveset includes Iaijutsu

ok Cred Forums, knight vs samurai

first off a samurai is superior to knights in many ways, first euopeans prefered first stike cumbersome weapons, samurai prefered lightning quickness, second, knights armor is made of metal, it rusts and is not as effective as silk and leather armor because friction stops arrows and all types of stabbs better than a simple plate of steel or chainmail which cannot protect against stabbing, why does leather work better than steel, first off it is completely flexable, how do u think modern bullet proof vest work? steel? no its friction caused by hundreds of layers of special cloth, the samurai were masters of the sword and bow, the japanese bow was of equal strenth of the english bow but could shoot up to 500 yrds due to its size and draw, its drawlenth that gives better distance in flight like a rifle vs pistol, or a crossbow vs longbow, longbow wins just as rifle outranges pistol, draw lenth. anyway steel armor is better for blunt trama, nothing else, its too heavy and i would personally challenge any knight with my katana or my yumi bow and if that warrior was of equal skill my speed would at least double him, y because im not wearing my god dam stove plate for protection, im wearing the predicessor of kevlar. and by the way another reason a japanese bow would out range english bows is because bamboo arrows are extremely light and just as strong as wood arrows, i have tested this therory my self.
pic related as its my katana
ordered it from Japan for $1000 american and i've trained for 2 years now

Because it's cool and people got over muh realism.

No mi amigo, the reason rapiers are great is because they make armor damn near irrelevant and they are fast.

What you said isn't wrong, it's just an afterthought really. Also spears beat out 90% of all weapons.

>rapiers make armor damn near irrelevant
Retard

>Also spears beat out 90% of all weapons.
what about a spear with a hammer?

No sword can thrust through plate armour, stop spouting your retarded shit fag.

it's the lovechild of a katana and a boxcutter

That's what I called taste.

they are great thrusting weapons and the blade is just bendy enough to slide in a joint and do some real damage.

That's the 10 %

realism is more interesting than boring fantasy shit

the reason because rapiers became more common is because people started wearing less armor. Why? Not because Rapiers made armor irrelevant its because guns did. and people prefered something fast so the Rapier became more popular.

Rapiers

...

clearly that katana wasn't made by a superior Nippon master. It's just a cheap imitation made by some dumb baka gaijin who probably didn't even fold it 10000 times.

plebs, the lot of you

Shortswords. I love them. Especially when used alone. The choice of weapon for a complete novice who's adventure has just begun. Or the choice for a master who gimps himself or has always used it. It's flexible, only has uses in combat and can be used by all walks of life.

All of them

Double dagger or shortsword dagger or OR double short sword.
Nasty shit irl too.

Arab and Indian type swords are cool as fuck

chinese shields are cool shit too. too bad they're under represented in games.

Katanas are hand and half swords that are even shorter than some one handed sabres.

How many damn knives do you really need? Also, buttcrack!

Stage 2 ARMA autists are great for a chuckle. Lots of Katana butthurt, especially for their popularity and representation in Hollywood.

My favorite weapon in any game.

I love hatchet type weapons, just wish they were more viable as a weapon of choise in video games.

I don't really have one.

When are we gonna get some cool looking non metal weapons in games, I mean look at this shit

Man is the landsknecht attired stylish as fuck.

And it was mostly civilian use. Militaries would focus on things like pike and shot tactics.

>look up early shields
>google gives me pictures of Brooke shields when she was a child

Goddamnit, that's not what I meant google

wtf i hate katanas now

>disarm your enemies
>rip off their armor
>fist them while they cry for mercy
Weaponfags will never know this feeling.

Swords have plenty of experience in disarming people

>Fistfags will never remove his opponents entire arm

I like spears and lances, but the idea of smashing someone upside the head with a mace is growing in me.

The almighty kusari-gama used by Ryu in Ninja Gaiden or Hanzo Hattori in Samurai Warriors, every damn time. Chain / flexible weapons are the last weapons you learn to use in martial arts, as they're the hardest to learn even the basic proper use of, but potentially the most effective / lethal.

>inb4 ds2 was shit

>it's not for combat, other then 1v1 duels

You sir dont know what you are fucking talking about. You are normal fag who dont know the difference between rapier and épée or some shit like that. Rapier IS weapon of war. You triggered me so fucking much. And Im not even rapier fanboy. Im more of a sabrefag.

forgot pic

Duel wielding gunshields is the obvious answer you fucking idiots

good thing its in the other souls games too

>best melee weapon

you're on another level man

>I wonder how well they would've done without all those spears

Polearms and especially spears were always main weapon of war. Even before development of rapier, everyone, everywere were using spears. Do you think that during medieval times battle were fought by swords?

true but the ds2 one had the best mechanics imo

if you shoot them point blank does it count as a melee weapon

find out next time on dragonball z

isnt that image from DaS1 though

He's not wrong. A Katana is shorter, thicker and heavier than the typically compared european longsword. It's designed that way because Japan sucks shit at making swords

yeah but couldnt find a good quality image from ds2 and im away from my computer rn so i cant screengrab one

they're very similar aesthetically tho so it doesnt make too much of a difference

youtube.com/watch?v=HhSECzK21EA
The fucking katana BTFOs the longsword. It can't even cut a SMALL BOTTLE.

Postal 2 has the best melee weapons in my opinion.

>the cameraman changed angles because he saw a spider and didn't want to stand in the grass

...

>this meme again
The stabbing in the gap/joint thing was highly situational and was mostly used in ground wrestling with a dagger

It's hard as fuck to stab between the gaps when your opponent is a trained knight trying to fucking kill you

Try out Cataclysm dark days ahead
This game has every weapon you want, I guarantee that.

It's also one of the only way to deal with heavily armored foes if you had a sword or some bladed weapon, because you certainly aren't going to cut him or thrust through a breastplate.

It worked, it wasn't the best option, but it was AN option. Obviously you'd rather bring a poleaxe, but you might not have one on hand

Two handed maces/hammers.
I don't care that the really top heavy ones are fictional.
They look fucking dope.

They have really thick blades though.

It's a cool aesthetic, so it stands to reason that the it'd be popular, it's just a shame one handed warpicks and maces get screwed because of it.

>Both are designed for different purposes.
Wrong. They had exactly the same purposes and were used quite similarly.

mace is the fucking best
>can smash shit
>can slash shit
>can block shit
what else do you need. Also you have swag with the mace.

Flanged mace?

Uriziel is the best weapon

Forgot pic

yeah thats one

Nothing too special, but the look of it and it's good damage has made it a favorite of mine on my main.

>scallywags

high quality plate armors were still being used by Polish hussars against Musketmen in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Probably these 2

spear

why do people take photos of things on their dirty ass bed/floor all the time?

what are those aztec clubs with all the flint teeth called?

Utter nonsense. What destroyed the armored knight was the introduction of firearms and even then some still opted to wear a cuirass, even when flintlocks saw widespread use. A bladed weapon is almost useless against anyone who wears plate unless it is used as a fucking wedge or a crowbar to attack the gaps. And while you're fishing for gaps with your toothpick, the enemy knight will just cut your unarmoured throat and march on.

It looked especially well sticking out of Gomez's dethroned corpse.

Its amazing how he hits that sword so hard it changes into a different sword

Niponese steel is so superior ir turns in to a straight sword when you swing it, and swords hit by it transform in to different swords so it may break them more easily.

Truly masters of their craft.

What a masterful stroke
He changed his sword from a single-edge curve, to a straight double-edge

Brass knuckles

No wonder blacksmiths hit them with hammers, there is no telling what will happen.
It even manages to move the watermark in the top left corner. Even the producers felt it

Real life Bloodborne weapon?

Mess me up pham.

its very situational. if i have a shield and my enemy has a shield i would have a flail over any other weapon because the flail i can swing at the shield and it will go around the shield. there is no real effective way to block a flail hit because they will out of hit and hurt like crazy or bounce off and you can use the momentum to do your next swing.

they are just very effective against shields. if you're not fighting someone with a shield they can be next to useless

pretty much anything other than a buckler

this formation is really stupid when you think about how exposed those feet are.

how are you suppsoe to attack me when spears are cutting at your toes and ankles just fucking you up.
shortly you would be lowering your shield to defend your feet meaning the guy behind you will have his face and upper torso exposed.

sure the romans made it work but i've had far to much experience with shield walls vs spears and i know your feet and legs are exposed as fuck during the fights

>draw speed
its not a pistol duel

mace ez pham. love a game with a good stagger animation to let me feel the massive blows

Mein Junge!

That formation is solely against archers. It failed badly against opponents who combined archery with cavalry charges like Parthia did.

Its like you made a manga about the worst part of Jojo's bizzare adventure. The stupid 'I knew that you knew that I knew' shit

>implying

shit romans were stupid or the people fighting them were.
combine a shield wall with long spears and a line of archers to make them keep their shields up and watch them get picked apart
