What level can you stomach?

I'm weird when it comes to gore. I like blowing people to gibs and body parts flying. but moment it comes to snapping legs or arms in half slowly or something I just fucking nope out.

I can stomach it all but I think pretty much every game can be made better by adding gore effects.
I mean, what's the fun in killing somebody with a rocket launcher if he doesn't turn into meaty chunks?
It's not as fun to swing a sword at people if there's no dismemberment.

It's not real, just simulated, often poorly.
Once devs manage to add appropriate smells though, things get much more horrifying and vomitty.

Gore depends on how it's portrayed. Enemies getting cut in half all the time during normal gameplay is one thing (basically inconsequential, and can actually enhance how fun the game is since it's a form of feedback), a detailed look at a person getting their limbs severed horribly is an entirely different thing.

I'm okay with the former, not a fan of the latter.

One time I played Yakouga 4 for like 6 hours in a row, while I was actually playing it didn't really bother me, but when I stopped playing it I kind of started feeling sick. Long exposure to grotesque imagery probably not good for the brain.

Most folks I've talked to have problems handling on-screen suffering. It's a lot easier to empathize when desperate screams of pain than some goofy flying giblets

None of it repulses me, the reliance on gore to sell your game without any actual substance is what shits me though.

With absolute zero edginess in my statement, i say that gore is nothing. The violence doesnt like, offend me or anything, but some of the more extreme shit just falls flat for me. Actual violence thats less over the top (such as the sudden, three frame twist John Marston does when you melee somebody with the throwing knife and stab their gutz) is always way more impactful to me than a spooky dooky intestine on the wall.

Thats what killed silent hill 4 for me, they went way too hard

The reason why waxworks is worst for some people is because the realistic art has an uncanny valley effect mixed with the gore. MKX is completely over the top and comical.

That's probably because when you see someone getting exploded, its a quick death and you're just met with body parts and shit flying across the map, making it arguably a "fast" death where they don't have to suffer through it, unless you do something like blow their legs off but they're still living.

When you see shit like some guys eye slowly getting carved out with a knife, you just naturally crease at the idea of it going on for so long, and that even after that experience is over he's still (likely) living and feeling the pain of the effect as well as his new condition.

Games do this kind of thing really clumsily.
They just shove it everywhere to the point where it becomes comical.

I enjoy all forms of fictional violence thoroughly. I think disgust and violence are extremely important topics in arts and culture, and no matter whether hilariously over the top or serious and grating, I enjoy it (as a topic, in the latter case). I'm rather desensitized to real violence as well for personal reasons, but can't take seeing brains damaged or heads smashed in, no matter how obviously fake the representation. That's the only thing though.

I think the problem is that it could either go the absolutely over the top absurdist direction you see in some Takashi Miike films for example OR turn into serious, realistic violence,- Maybe something like the circle of blood in Saló. But torture is probably before that, or, staying with film terms and examples, gorn or exploitation,- Think Hostel or Cannibal Holocaust (minus the real animal violence of course).

Why are games actually being singled out for being violent that much? I mean, compare the violence in infamous games like Manhunt 2 or Mortal Kombat to the shit you see in some movies: All the exploitation flicks of the 70s, the 120 days of Sodom, Inside (the one with the baby), Ichi the Killer, even just Valhalla Rising, to name a few of the top of my head. Interactivity isn't that great an argument since most "ultra-violent" scenes that really concentrate on the violence/gore (executions, fatalities) are basically little pre-packaged cutscenes. If you can blow enemies up into tiny chunks, it's not a realistic representation of violence, as far as I can remember from games like Bulletstorm and the like where that was a feature. Does that huge difference really just stem from interactivity? It's a huge factor in comparing media, but I feel like it's the only one in this discussion.
