I don't understand the Yugoslav wars...

I don't understand the Yugoslav wars. Was there a real a strong desire for independance or was it only Nato and Europe destroying an old ally of Russia after its loss of influence ?

If that's all you know, this is defiantly not the place to learn about it. Just go and read some articles somewhere.
Also Yugoslavia was de facto an American ally.
Almost became a NATO member 1951-1957, that period featured a lot of US equipment sent to the Yugoslav army.

Well, I know the EU has littearly been giving your country billions that magically disappeared. Sorry, your country is a failed state, I don't even understand why it's kept alive. Probably because other powers have some kind of interest in keeping it for a while.

>I know the EU has littearly been giving your country billions
You really know jack shit about this place don't you?

is this accurate?

Why is Croatia shaped so weird? Is there some geographical feature?

Yugoslavia was just a transitional state for Slovenes, many Slovene politicians announced that in the 50'. We had to repair damaged infrastructure and industry with a lot of workforce, so joining a larger country and therefore a greater worforce was the easiest solution to the problem. Right after the death of Tito, Slovene politicians and other influental persons started preparations for Slovene secession. It should be noticed that the Yugoslav constitution allowed it.

More or less.

whores, just like croats

Ask Tito

but not willing to be yours and thats what troubles you

Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Carantanians) were 3 large Slavic groups that migrated to the Balkans with a bunch of smaller negligible ones like Travunians, Zahumians, Paganians (named so cuz they wuz pagans) etc.
Bosniaks are Croats and Serbs that converted to Islam because of benefits. Bosnia was previously a land of magnates where the commoners were taxed to hell, so lower taxes appealed to them. Also they weren't really religious, because they openly admitted various heretic that were exiled from other countries.
Montenegrins are Serbs that historically saw themselves as Serbs who were higher than other Serbs. As Montenegro was where the first Serbian state was formed (because a Byzantine treasure ship crashed on the coast) and was later always given to the heir apparent to govern (and then the heir, backed by nobles, leads a rebellion to overthrow his dad, as was common in feudalism), it always had a special status. The core of it was never conquered by the Turks and that gave them an even bigger superiority complex despite the fact that Turks couldn't be bothered collecting piss for taxes in narrow mountain passes filled with bandits.

imagine that the french kings didnt conquer france bit by bit over 800 years but all at once. we would have burgundians fighting aquitainians too if they were not slowly cucked for centuries into being french

>bandits
yeah that sums up the balkans perfectly

Yeah, yeah, so funny, god of humor.

But yes, Ottoman rule lead to a rise in the number of outlaws in every country in the Balkans.

daily reminder yugoslavia is a forced meme

it was forced 2 times after a world wars and never lasted

also I'm rustled because we have a yugo stamp even tho we were part of yugoslavia through ~5% of our history

FUCK YUGOSLAVIA

you are yugoslavs though

why do you bait in yugo threds famalam?

he's right though, you guys are, by definition, yugoslavs

you even speak the same language as Serbs and Bosnians

>be part of grorious austrian empire
>"nah, we'd rather be poor irrelevant shitholes, sorry"

copypasting my answer for all these dumb threads
Yugoslavia or the balkans?
for the balkans, its basically 500 years of turk rule then 70 years of communism, you think we wont be fucked up?
as for yugoslavia, tito took loans from all sides, west and east, and when he died they demanded the dosh back, it was all nice and good while he was alive, the people who lived during that time were called titova generacija, tito's generation, living like kings
after that the economy tanked
when people are in poverty they turn to nationalism especially in the balkans, and thats when the slovenes decided to split, after that the violent peasants in bosnia started their own little wars with croats vs bosniaks, serbs vs bosniaks etc etc, it was a real mess, people can do terrible things in turbo nationalism mode, all sides committed atrocities, and then it balkanized as the balkans do, people blame the west, some people don't some people do, i think they had a hand in its dissilusion because it wouldnt drop socialism, and that was unnaceptable, but in the end it was our own nationalism and stupidity which ruined a good thing we had.

oh and in kosovo it was basically this, milosevic literally got in power by pledging to protect the serbs in kosovo which were being harassed by albo majority in there during the ruckus of the 80s where no one knew what the fuck was going on, afterwards when albos launched full fledged insurgency in kosovo, milosevic would have none of that and he just invaded it and did harass some people, but mostly people who were harboring UCK, members of a terorist organization (recognized as such even by the CIA at the time actually), but later on the west saw an opportunity to both end the violence in the region for good (in their eyes) and secure an "ally" in the balkans, so they chose the albanians in kosovo as their thralls and went in kosovo bombed the shit out of it with depleted uranium (harming more albos than serbs, ironically, not that the albos mind), including belgrade until milosevic backed down and later kosovo got de facto indipendence, why? because of this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Bondsteel
big powers do everything for power in the end, in the kosovo war scenario im on the serbs side as my country is also dealing with kosovo albanians and their renewed UCK, I don't like them at all, in bosnia I take no sides, shit was fucked up

ottomans
we once had large chunk of bosnia but lost it bit by bit through out history

Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Kosovo aren't real countries
Balkan war now!

im hoping for war soon its pretty boring, imagine the warpop videos in HD

Are you Bosnian serb or bosniak?

mom is bosniak dad is serb

apstraktni osecaj

Well I don't know. Could it be that no one wants another fucking war in the Balkans so it's in our best interest to keep the region stable and balanced?

You can see what happens when the state authority collapses in Iraq, Libya, Syria or Donbass. It's an utter catastrophe.

The West supports much worse regimes for this very reason.

who says no one wants another war in the balkans? its the best way to settle things, we need one

What exactly did it settle? You used to be pretty rich in the 80s and now you're shitholes with the exception of Slovenia.

you just need an excuse to ethnically cleanse some shqips

Do people care about ethnicity/religion much nowadays or is it still a hot topic? Do you live in srpska?

yeah we were pretty rich because tito used to borrow from both sides from USSR and USA and invest all that in yugo it was a pretty sweet gig but we cant do that anymore
only thing we can do now is ethnically cleanse our countries to achieve total homogeneity only then will there be peace in the balkans

Ah yes it's the evil west that is making Bosnia literally one of the poorest dysfunctional shitholes on this continent.

people seem to not care, but when shtf its life or death almost, or when everyones drunk and a stranger comes to the group
Yes i live in srpska, my dad did fight in the war on the serb side and mom made shells in the factory for the army

>chinks in Croatia

dubs konfrimmeth

>ally of Russia
Not even close. They were the gommies we got along with. Like Finland the played the middle as opposed to picking sides during the Cold War. Pretty sure Tito hated Stalin.

those r japs reenacting yugo wars

doesnt matter tho yugo was still socialist and that alone is red flag in merican eyes, so once USSR was collapsed yugo was next on their hitlist

chinese stomped their attempt with tanks on Tiananmen Square and are now number 2 or 1 economy

Doesn't Yugoslav just mean Southern Slavs? Which nation or not you technically are. It would be like us Burgers saying we weren't North Americans.

hayduks are bulgarian

>ally of russia
???

>alone is red flag in merican eyes, so once USSR was collapsed yugo was next on their hitlist
Bullshit, Cuba would have made more sense. Also we wouldn't have your crappy cars here if we really had a problem with you. I've never heard anyone say anything negative about this irl. The Serbs I know don't even say anything bad about the other groups. Some people do dislike Russians though.

It was an attempt to amalgamate South Slavs into a single Ethnicity

opinion of the general public is irrelevant, US government was on a quest to eradicate everything socialist and yugo was very easy target, just poke it a bit while nationalism was already stirring

Show some respect for all the money you got from us.

Everyone in the Balkans has Hayduks, just look at the list in the wikipedia article, it's like rakia.

>Was there a real a strong desire for independance or was it only Nato and Europe destroying an old ally of Russia after its loss of influence ?

To know Serbs is to hate Serbs. I think Yugoslavia would be fine to this day, if the capital was switched to Ljubljana (which is something that Serbs would never ever accept)

tito build 50% of the factories in slovenia tho..

They were made with Slovene finances, just like factories all over Yugoslavia.

Yes and the U.S. government cared far more about Castro 90 miles from our coast than a small country in the Adriatic. The problem with Yugoslavia was the UN got involved and militia forces completely ignored the UN and the Bosnian Muslims had really good PR.

what slovene finances?

all your "historical data" here sounds not just made up, but completely out of touch with how the real world works.

I never understood this war, could someone summarize? I dont feel like googling

>The core of it was never conquered by the Turks
t. I never went to high school

...

>implying turks ever had any control over central montenegro

rakia is bulgarian too moron just because others drink it doesn't mean its theirs

Look at this guy.
Let me guess, Burek is Bulgarian as well?

>implying they didn't raze Cetinje multiple times
If you don't know how Ottoman state worked don't bother writing about it and misinforming the audience.

rakia is literally brandy, they had that shit in middle east for like 3000 years, its just how we balkanites call it

rakia comes from arabic araq ("sweat"), if the medieval bulgarians didn't speak arabic, then it's hardly arabic

>hardly arabic
*hardly bulgarian

This is the problem with the Balkans.
I watched a Turkish youtube video on how to make burek, and the comment section was Bosnians, Albanians etc. all yelling that Burek is theirs.

>Bulgaria cites an old piece of pottery from the 14th century in which the word rakinja is inscribed.

>During an archaeological study, Bulgarian archaeologists discovered an 11th-century fragment of a distillation vessel used for the production of rakiya. Due to the age of the fragment, hence contradicting the idea that rakiya production only began in the 16th century, some historians believe this indicates that rakiya did originally come from Bulgaria.[4]

>both sources are newspaper
>first written source is from lalaş ahin in 1382, 30 years after the turks conquered first city in the balkans

>first written source is from lalaş ahin in 1382, 30 years after the turks conquered first city in the balkans
yes, and it's from bulgaria

yes, after the bulgarians were in contact with the ottomans and other beyliks for at least 3 decades. why use the arabic name for bulgarian drink?

Samuilo je Makedonac i otac Makedonske nacije.

B-H should ally with Bolivia

>yugoslavia
>old ally of russia
ayyy

It's not landlocked

parts of rakia distillation vessels were found in bulgaria dating to 11th century

no turks then, little serblet

>no turks in 11th century
Sure, Turks fell from the sky

Anyways I've yet to see a credible source, all I've seen is an article from Bulgarian newspaper.

A non-country created after WW2 splits up.
The Serb, who have been in charge since the beginning, are butthurt and start killing anyone who is for balkanization (except the Macedonians, for some reason).
After things chill a little, Albanian terrorists start bombing Serbia to achieve "independece" for Kosovo. NATO steps in because they haven't tested their weapons in a while.

Serbia gets smaller and smaller and by 2015 they control only 20% of what used to be Yugoslavia.

The end.

After WW1*.

>Serbs in charge after WW2
>Italian education

Serbia was only in charge in the interwar period.
The government structure of socialist Yugoslavia was made specifically to reduce Serbian political influence.

Liberty for Vojvodina and Kosovo, fuck Serbs to death

t. Ante

>liberty for vojvodina
liberty for americans to suck our vojvodinian benis

It's shitty traveling through there but the burek is really cheap

Why did yugoslavia go to pieces?

Why did Czechoslovakia go to pieces?

At the same time why did Germany unite?

blaim the roaches desu

But where is the best burek?

On baščaršija, so they say.

Nowhere to buy Rakija in the US

where you get really hungry

Just get moonshine or something

In the bakery that's run by the Gorani people

wsws.org/en/articles/1999/06/germ-j24.html

can you brew your own in the most freedom country on earth?

Serbia is a powerless and poor country.

this man is based

>than a small country in the Adriatic
one thing i learned about people from yugoslavia, is that they all think that yugoslavia was a lot more powerful and relevant than it actually was

It was more relevant than all successor states combined tho.

Death to all our neighboring countries.

how does mutual intelligibility work among southern slavs?

I think there was no problem with Serbs and Croats since westerners called the language Serbo-Croat, but could they communicate well with slovenians and macedonians/bulgarians?

Yes, just go to the /ex-yu/ general and you'll almost never see English unless used to communicate with a foreigner, and even then that's frowned upon... by Croat(s) especially.
Slovenian is a bit weird, but understandable, tho i'm not sure if they're to speak their language or Serbo-Croatian.
As for Bulgarian... sometimes i 100% understand it, other times it's down to 50%.

I'll try to cut this short. If they've held a referendum on a national level, the secessionists would've lost, ignominiously so.The country was quite developed, even comparable to West European recipients of the Marshall Plan, it has the fifth most powerful conventional army in the world, had a mayor stabilizing global presence in world politics (Non-Aligned movement), was openly opposed to Israel and Zionism and was too powerful of a country for the EU to tolerate her at her very southern border.

So glorious that Socialist Yugoslavia has outdone her in less than half a century of time. Also, no one would've left your prison of nations if it weren't for your compromise with the Hungarians.

> tito took loans from all sides, west and east, and when he died they demanded the dosh back, it was all nice and good while he was alive, the people who lived during that time were called titova generacija, tito's generation, living like kings
after that the economy tanked

The economy tanked because of later mismanagement of it's most lucrative industries and besides, the debt accumulation only began after 1976.

Voli vi njemackog kurca vise nego vase dostojanstvo.

No it wouldn't have, because Cuba wasn't a conventional world power that commanded global influence over it's Non-Aligned movement.

>Also we wouldn't have your crappy cars
Slander commercials made by indigenous companies aside, the car only had problems with high emission rates.

>They were made with Slovene finances, just like factories all over Yugoslavia

Only in Slovenia.

I'll use small words, when a country's main export are sophisticated machines, parts for nuclear missiles and ships, when she commands global influence over it's Non-Aligned movement and fields the fifth most powerful army in the world, is she considered insignificant ?

Because Eastern Europe needs to be "balkanized" in order to pose no threat to it's Western counterpart, mainly Germany.

That's rich coming from a country which was forcibly unified at the very twilight of the 19th century. Also, it's good to see that your historians are willing to abandon objectiveness in favor of some insignificant Italian casualties at the Foibe.

Also, Croats and Slovenes have only seen Yugoslavia as a "transition", they' never planned to remain a part of it.

Its called profit. Oil, coal, mining, natural gas.

There's none of that here.

Helo guyz wat is yugoslw var?
