No. Having a car is expensive and gas prices are the highest in the world. If you live in a larger city, parking is very expensive in the centre and many people park kilometres from the centre to then take a tram, subway or bus to the centre. The train takes you everywhere in the country in less than four hours.

Having said that, a car still isn't more expensive than public transportation if you use it regularly and buses in less populated rural areas with no bigger (100000 people) cities often just come once an hour, which is pretty terrible.

Plus if you live near the border, public transportation to and from Germany is really bad, so for shopping there a car is very handy.
