Quedlinburg is nice because the west chose to make it so. The local economy could never support that kind of repair and reconstruction work. I hope to be a UN world heritage side generates more tourism for them. Northern central German has so much to offer and so few international tourists.

That's a myth, it's federal taxes. Länderfinanzausgleich funds go to the states, Autobahnen are paid for by the Bund.
