WW2 games went out of favor not because they made them about WW2. It was because they made them about a small set of scenarios and battles over and over again and from the Allies view point. You'd think Operation Marketgarden was the most important part of the war if you looked those games.

I mean, imagine a game that would focus on a single german soldier that lives trough the war. Early you march trough the France victorious. You get sent to the eastern front, fight in Stalingrad, Kursk or other big conflict. Then you defend Germany in hopeless last stand against numberless enemy. During the game you'd make choices, that would effwct both gameplay and endings. Even if you get never to the death camps, you'd still get choices that could result in war crimes and darker endings, but short term boons, like promotions, new weapons and bonus missions. Not following orders would get you punished.

Or you could make game about defebse of Poland, greek resistance or other part of the war rarely in spotlight.
