This thread is for the discussion of the language, culture, travel, daily life, etc. of Japan. Let's tark at randam in Japanese and English. Take it easy!
I don't know, maybe because he loves history and collected it from somewhere or someone passed it on to him. He was born in 1936 so he was only a child during the war, though he served in the US Navy in the 50's so perhaps he got it during his time in it somehow.
He also had this, a "good conduct letter" that the Allies would drop on German troops, and a 1939 Iron Cross 2nd Class

別人 and 他 seem the closest to what I was trying to say, though I'm not sure which is better to actually use written
「他の人」が言うことは気にするな。 →Never mind what other people say. そのメガネをかけると、彼女は「別人」に見える。 →She looks like a different person with those glasses on.

Why would you want to give it away if you got it from your grandfather?
Levi Hernandez

Intonation.
Joseph Anderson
He's been dead for six years and while I don't necessarily want to give it away its the right thing to do.
And its not giving it away, its returning it to the family of the soldier it was originally taken from as a war trophy in WWII (through a non-profit organization that finds the family).
Adam Cook
Then it's "I am「俺」, but he is 「他」"? Or is 別人 the only way to say that?
I'm sorry for so many questions. It seems very strange as someone who only knows English.
Christopher Martinez

How so? Is there a common difference in intonation between those two? Now given the general tone I would gravitate towards the former, but that's an awfully subjective thing to go by. May have to settle with it.

I ate a bowl of rice and some cheese. It was good. What about you, Brazil-san?
Luis Myers
Oh, no, I was using "he" as an example for "someone else".
But it seems like in the context, 別人 would be the closest thing to the English "Self vs. Other".
Thanks for all the help.
Nicholas Evans
>its the right thing to do. It's the wrong thing to do. You are being disrespectful to your grandfather.
>originally taken ... as a war trophy All the more reason to keep it.
Lucas Davis
>"Self vs. Other" 自分 vs. 他人 I think 他 means closest to "other." When you have a check box that says "other" on a questionnaire or something, it's usually translated as 「その他」 in Japanese.
Camden Flores

>I got a new friend nice! >He was a little too talkative www He is friendly, isn't he? did you go to drink?
Varies by dialect but for standard Japanese you should be able to tell them apart. Not sure how useful this is in singing though.
You already have some context - "我々の平気" sounds weird. And I'm assuming you've omitted additional context. But realistically, when are you ever not going to have context in practice? Not just with lyrics but in general conversation, it's really not a problem - even when you have the wrong intonation people can understand you (in part because dialects have variation in intonation) on the basis of context. And when that doesn't work you can just pick a rough synonym or deliberately disambiguate.
Jordan Powell
>Salad (Tomatoes and lettuce), rice and beans, farofa, pasta and meat. wow,ご馳走だ… sounds yummy.

I never eat out. I survive off chicken and rice or chicken and noodles that I cook myself. Tbh I don't know how interested I am in sushi. I don't really want to eat raw fish or fish eggs or whatever they put in it. I like cooked fish though
Evan Jackson
Thanks for the detailed reply. I do realize I'm way out of my element so far trying to make sense of (auditory) poetry, but I find homonyms to be really difficult in an art form based on bending meaning. >You already have some context - "我々の平気" sounds weird. It does? See, that's a subtlety I didn't pick up on. > And I'm assuming you've omitted additional context. Yeah, naturally. Guess it's good practice to just always consider the whole to significantly reduce these uncertainties. >But realistically, when are you ever not going to have context in practice? Not just with lyrics but in general conversation, it's really not a problem True true, I don't really struggle with that a lot in conversation. Mostly it's pretty clear. >even when you have the wrong intonation people can understand you That's another thing I was kinda worrying about; and quite reassuring if that's the case.
Gavin Davis
You should eat takoyaki as soon as possible!!!
Grayson Murphy
>chicken Why not meat? Eating chicken all the time will give you bosoms.
>doesn't like raw fish >likes cooked fish Opposite to me. Before I lived in Japan I couldn't make myself eat cooked fish at all, but could manage raw. Now I really like raw and can tolerate cooked.
Anyway you should try some stuff. There is also sushi without raw fish/roe. If you go to a decent restaurant you could just ask for recommendations (not just sushi but in general).
>I'm really interested in eating ramen and anything with rice in it I prefer udon and soba to ramen. In my view most interesting Japanese foods don't have rice in them. Alongside, maybe.
Carter Rivera
I will definitely try it when I visit Osaka, that's where the best takoyaki shops are at, right?
Aiden Johnson
Chicken is meat. I just like it a lot. Only chicken breast though. I'm not really into steaks or anything and chicken goes well with rice so I just eat it.
To be honest I've never eaten sushi or raw fish so I don't know for sure but it seems pretty きもい. I'll try it when I'm in Japan though because why not
I don't really know much about Japanese foods but I'll just try everything I can

Finally got to try takoyaki earlier this year. It's really weird, I can't even say if I liked it or not. That means I will have to conduct some further experiments, of course. Didn't expect the mayonnaise, either :DDD >tfw you made an ass out of yourself trying to eat ramen out of the bowl like a regular Western dish, invariably splashing shit all across the table
Robert Myers
Nobody I know (friends, family) who has eaten takoyaki doesn't like it.

How do you say season in Japanese. As in how would I say something like >I watched the first season of [anime] Would you just use シーズン?

Do Japanese people have any kind of a cultural boner for certain decades? For example, West have met with the wave of the 80s lovers some time ago. Could something like that happen in Japan?
